Awards
Manorwood is a multi award winning consultancy. Below are details of some of the award winning projects that we have undertaken.

Wapsbourne Manor
The project, which lasted over 12 months, included a complete re roofing, timber frame repairs, windows repairs, replacement infill panels, insulation improvements and re plastering. Two of the chimney stacks were also re built and a complete internal refurbishment was undertaken.
The property is now heated by three discretely placed air source heat pumps and has been insulated as far as possible without altering its character using a combination of sheep wool, wood wool boards and insulating lime plasters

Kent Cottage
The project, which lasted over 10 months, included signifying timber frame repairs, windows replacement, replacement infill panels, insulation improvements and re rendering.
The approach to the repairs was one of maximum retention of historic fabric and so numerous face patches were carried out to ensure original timber framing was retained wherever possible.

Pallingham Quay Cart Shed, Weald and Downland Living Museum

Wiston Estate Winery

North Choller Farmhouse
The restoration of a tired Georgian farmhouse revived its historic character while meeting modern sustainability standards.
Cement render was removed to reveal and restore original flint and brickwork, with lime pointing and reclaimed roofing materials.
Natural insulation, timber restoration, and a new Orangery enhance comfort and functionality. A basement plant room was created below the water table, and heating is supplied via a biomass pellet boiler.

The Charleston Trust's Barns and Galleries

Hole Barn
The project involved the conversion of the barn in to a 2 bedroom dwelling and the remodelling of the pre fabricated garage building to provide a contemporary outbuilding clad in Corten steel.
The conversion of the barn has created a stunning living space which is light and modern but respects the character of the barn as well as the setting of the adjacent farmhouse which sits in close proximity.
The striking garage building complements the historic building whilst providing a functional modern outbuilding.

Tye Oak Farm
The project set about removing the modern farm buildings and converting the historic buildings to provide a single residence.
This includes the construction of replacement ranges built to reinstate lost elements but incorporating historic fabric, including an early flint wall, and the construction of a contemporary glass link to connect the ranges and allow the buildings to function as a single dwelling.
The project was designed by Manorwood who also undertook research on the property and provided heritage advice.

Muddle House

The Spread Eagle, Midhurst
Manorwood provided heritage advice to assist Lion Roofing in the roofing of the 400 year old section of this historic hotel in Midhurst Town Centre using traditional materials and techniques as well as providing thermal improvement through the use of natural insulation.

The George in Rye
Working alongside RX Architects Manorwood provided heritage advice and specifications for the conservation and repair work on the historic coaching inn formed from a cluster of interlinked listed buildings in the heart of the ancient citadel, which was subject to a devastating fire in July 2019.
The complex restoration project focused on a sustainable design ethos to renovate the existing building fabric combined with salvaged and reused materials.

The Bill House
We undertook detailed research into the property and provided heritage advice to guide the project, focusing on improving the setting without compromising its historic character. We reorganized the site by introducing secure boundary fencing, relocating bin stores away from key views, and upgrading the main entrance. We also restored the historic flint cobbled courtyard, carefully cleaning and re-laying it to create safe, level access.
We led the transformation of the gardens, including the creation of a purpose-built dementia garden to the south of the house. This space was designed to be safe, accessible, and stimulating for residents, with a formal layout reflecting the Arts and Crafts character of the building. Overall, our work improved the usability, appearance, and heritage value of the site.

The Swan Inn
Key works included structural repairs, soundproofing, ecological considerations, and restoring historic elements. Now reopened, the inn boasts 12 bespoke hotel rooms, a locally inspired restaurant, and a pub floor preserved for the community, all crafted using traditional methods.
The project was led by David Minns and Diego Perez of Prime Meridian Architects with heritage support provided by Manorwood.

St John's Priory
The project, which took around 10 months, included a number of elements, including:
- The complete replacement of the plastered walls within the room which had all been previously replaced in cement and causing significant damp. This was replaced with an insulating lime plaster.
- The reinstatement of skirting to match the ornate ceiling, restoration of the timber floor and repairs to the fine Georgian doors.
- The restoration and redecoration of the Papier-mâché ceiling.

Sollers
Working closely with the Local Authorities’ Conservation Officer a scheme was developed that adopted a contemporary approach which was clearly a modern intervention and allowed for the original building to remain legible.
The project was designed by Alistair Riley Architects Ltd with Manorwood undertaking planning consultancy and heritage advice.

Westbrook House
The landscape to the north was excavated to create a terraced garden, which allowed direct access from the newly appointed pantry to the kitchen garden and reinstated Victorian vine-house.
The works were designed and led by Tom Turner Architects and carried out by Ghinn & Co. Manorwood provided heritage advice and supporting reports.
